🚀📚#TheGrowthBookClub Initiative
In the last few years, I began consuming a lot of professional literature via Audible and listening to professional podcasts. I’d tune-in while commuting to work (when that was still a thing), taking care of babies, folding laundry, cooking, cleaning, doing dishes/yard work, working out — there was always a book or a podcast playing in the background.
I know it’s not very Zen of me, but that’s the way I’m wired. And maybe… maybe that’s MY Zen. Consuming ideas, methodologies, data, and case studies…they all inspire me, help me grow and shape my career path — while relating to my work challenges (and yes — this means I am also working way more than 8 hours a day).
Most importantly — I can’t wait to put them to use or test them out the next day.
At the same time, I listen to way more content than I can actually apply that week, that month, or even that quarter. Over time, without actual practice, the takeaways fade away, and I remember bits and pieces and kind of know where to go back looking for content when I want to put it to work. But that doesn’t satisfy me much.
Every now and then, there comes a book that either -
1) Offers a fundamental framework that I want constant access to or that I think can benefit my network greatly
2) Offers practical advice to tackle a current work project/development goal at work
In cases like that, I’d resolve to my favorite way of internalizing information and transforming it into accessible knowledge, project-based learning. If I can, I will apply concepts at my work right away, and in many cases, I’d also create a short presentation of the main concepts I want to internalize, or even a workshop session, to share with others.
The process of making these deliverables so I can relay the information to other people — makes me learn it really well. At the same time, when possible — I look for personal examples or new examples from the market — to practice the craft myself.
Once this is done -
The #GrowthBookClub is actually the byproduct of my personal learning process. It is an initiative I hope will expand beyond the scope of my own projects and will be adopted by other individuals and professional communities.
The idea behind it is to regularly provide fellow growth practitioners with access and exposure to different tools and frameworks by other community members.
In each session, one of the members presents a book (or a few practical concepts from it) followed by a group discussion and/or workshop exercise. A different member volunteers to present and lead the discussion each time. As they prepare to do that — they practice and internalize the material further.
We were supposed to hold the first session in February 2020 — but then “The world turned upside down”🎶. We ended up holding it in September 2020 — in collaboration with the Growth Impact community, and are looking forward to holding many more in the year to come.
